Tonight I sat on my front porch, and gazed quietly at the thick, white snow. Flake upon flake, all in a heaping stack. Blanketing the lawn, the trees, the street. It felt dampening. Quieting. Soothing. Like a heavy comforter that you pull down tight to snuggle under on a crisp winter morning.
The night wrapped itself around me, and still, I found myself wishing for silence. Stillness. Calm. Cars passed slowly on the street, lights on, navigating slippery roads with caution.
I wished for the country side. Miles away from the nearest anything. No signs of man to intrude, distract, ruin. On a hill, in a clearing, in the forest. Still night. Moonlight. White, sparkling snow thick and heavy like poured sugar. Smoothing rough lines. Cold clear air, icy breath drifting, weightless, from a sigh.
Silence. Stillness. Utter calm.
